The scrapbook I ordered from Etsy arrived today and I got started. (Wild horses could not stop me!)
I am so pleased with it! It is totally handmade from (front cover) banana leaves and, inside, handmade paper with stitched threads to hold photos. Made by a wonderful woman -Andye, here is the link to her Etsy site http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=9531524
I have been given photos, newspaper articles and all of Nancy's published writings. So these things have to be included. Other than that I have been given a free hand. Wheee!
The first thing I did was...to make one of my 3D paper butterflies. It is made from yellow craft paper and tied with eyelash wool. (I have posted instructions for making these in an earlier post)
I then used silk thread to attach the two sterling silver, flat ingots with Nancy's name and the name of our Literacy Scheme which is "KLEAR" They dangle from the butterfly and make a little tinkle-ee sound. I ordered these from Etsy too. I love how it is turning out and I'd swear this scrapbook is "making itself" Do you know what I mean?
Here is a pic of the page I did for Nancy and her two tutors. In the red one on top is Nancy hugging Alice Blood (another beautiful lady who works as a tutor in our scheme) She got Nancy through the FETAC Certificate which is probably the level that your 17 year olds might do in England, Australia or United States.
In the blue frame underneath is Nancy's tutor who taught her to read and write (sorry, I don't know her name yet) Nancy had to leave school at age ten so you can imagine the journey they took.
Oh, did I tell you? This is my first scrapbook and I probably have a brass neck to take it on - but...Hey! I can do this...right?
If you are a new visitor to my blog you may want to read the next piece that explains who I am making the scrapbook for...
(...I have been asked to make a scrapbook for a wonderful lady in work. I will, of course, be sharing it with you as a work in progress.
This wonderful lady's name is Nancy and she is very special. She learned to read and write as an adult. Although a naturally shy, sensitive woman she went public with her literacy difficulties to highlight the problem so as to help others who had the same problem. She has been on radio, tv, newspapers, met presidents, stars of stage and screen, has been published and eventually became a literacy tutor herself. The scrapbook is a tribute to her and her contribution to the literacy service in Ireland and to mark her 20 year anniversary in our scheme. You will gradually come to know and love her as the scrapbook takes shape. Nancy - you are amazing!
I am so looking forward to it. I bought the scrapbook and all the stuff for it on Etsy -so all handmade and very reasonable price.
