Five Surprising Things you did not know About Me! SHOCK HORROR!

I have NOT been tagged to tell five things you did not know about me. But who can wait to be tagged? Not lil' ol' me for sure. So - here are five little known facts 'bout this ol' rock chick that you would not have guessed in a million years!

1.    I have a 22" waist. ......

yes, I AM SO skinny..,.....Yes, (deep inside this 32" waist resides a  22" waist) It has not seen the light of day since 1973 but hey!  10 inches ...that's only 5 inches each side. Not far from daylight right?

2 . I was ARRESTED on the CHAMPS ELYSEÉ, PARIS in 1972 for.......Busking!

Yes, that Champs Elysee in that Paris.

 I enjoyed evey minute of it. Yes, it was my finest hour. I can't even sing or play an instrument but Paul can and was and I was guilty of collecting the spondoolicks in the hat! WHEEEE! We both got arrested along with a man walkin' his dog without a lead and brought to the police station for an hour. Then we were released and told to get out of town.! Wheeeee! I'm a criminal! I Love this story and have been dining out on it for years!

I'd love to do this again before I die. One or both I don't mind. I am going to Amsterdam soon and might chance it there. Sure if we don't get arrested we might make a few bob right? Watch this space. Interpol take note!

3. I can't drive. Well, I CAN drive but don't as I developed a phobia re driving over the years and bought a bike instead. That's a bit boring right? Well this is not....Some drivers often come VERY close to me when I am cycling to work. It makes me nervous and I tend to wobble as they pass and would have been killed sooner or later but I came up with the perfect solution...

 

No not this lovely bike...read on

It goes like this..........When I hear a car coming up behind me I deliberately WOBBLE dangerously all over the place. This has the effect of frightening the bejeepers out of the driver upcoming and they give me a wide berth. Clever or wha? Survival of the wittiest!

4. I am a teacher  - but I left school at age 14  ....and I did so without a qualification of any kind or even a backward glance. I hated every minute I spent in school and now I'm the feckin' teacher! Ah, sufferin' heart!

 I still don't have a qualification (not even the Juinior Cert (done at age 15 here)  No, I just have 12 years of experience in actually DOING IT (Adult Ed, is the back door to becoming a teacher)  At work I have the opportunity and  the funding to do a degree in teaching but hey! I am too busy working and living to do it so I duck and dive and just keep on teaching!

 I am da teacha'! Whoooo! (under the radar - don't tell the Dept. of Ed - anyway I have a criminal record in France so probably don't qualify on any level)

5 I am an All Ireland Dancing Champion.

I have a medal for LINE Dancing. I won it in 19-hundred and splash!

Yes, I can and do throw a few shapes on the dance floor.

 (I was six before I found out I was NOT a ballet dancer.) No one told me otherwise before that - and therefore I truly believed I was. I did not know that one had to learn. Really. I actually believed I could just do it and did it or thought I was doing it. I was born to dance and so I did dance until someone "enlightened" me and then I lost the ability to be a dancer for years- a bit sad really)

 

But talent WILL out I did come to learn to dance and eventually won a national medal for it as part of my club group of line dancers, The Memphis Swingers,  a few years ago. (I can STILL ballet dance - don't care what anyone says...and Riverdance and Flamenco dance , Morris dance etc whooo!)

I am da' dancah!

This is a photo of my mam and dad on their wedding day taken in No. 72 Glentow Rd, Whitehall, Dublin 1952. (Her family home) 

I have just noticed that they have willow patten crockery on their table! I have it in my cottage. Gotta love willow pattern. I do -  and always have.

Anyway, this shows them on their wedding day in 1952, the photo shows that they had a wedding breakfast of  ..and I know ,'cos I asked her, sausages,black pudding and rashers and sliced bread. You can see them right in front of them as they are cutting the cake.

I love this photo. Here is a close up of their hands as they cut the cake and started on the journey that is  marriage.

Here is a photo taken the day my lovely Da died.

 23rd Dec. 2008.

Yes, last Christmas.

So reminiscent of the photo above....

 

this photo was displayed on his coffin at his funeral the day after Christmas.

In Feb. of this year, while I was still grieving for me Da, my husband, and rock, was diagnosed with cancer of the thyroid.

He has just come through the treatment for his cancer. We are still a bit raw and reeling from it. His prognosis is good and we are so happy with that.

Here is a photo taken of us on our wedding day in 1979 in Raheny Church, Dublin. This is our "For Better" photo.

But it all has a happy ending, at least for us...'cos here we are on the day he was released from hospital.

I love the sound of SZZZZZZZZZZnoring.

Am I the only person in this world who LIKES the sound of snoring?

I am a chronic sufferer of insomnia. Wish I COULD snore a lot more.

The rest of my family sleep soundly and prove it by SNORING  loudly.

The hubby does it,

 ....the sons do it.

..... (they are SO  going to kill me for taking these pics but will have to actually READ my blog to find out Ha!)

 Even the shaggin' dogs do it!

 (The cat purrs...= feline version of snoring. Leave it to cats to be awkward)

But I love it all.

Yep,

I love it. The sound of snoring. I love it.

My darling husband snores in my ear.

AHHH, how jealous I am. His head hits the pillow ....like a finger hits a light switch, ...and off he goes (bad cess to 'im).....off to the Land of Nod.

I love the sound of him snoring away happily until.....he stops!...yeah, he stops both snoring and/or breathing! He has episodes of sleep apnea....

Wha's that? I hear you say...

Well, it is when people temporarily suspend snoring  and/or breathing for AGES  ....and give free heart attacks to the insomniacs in the bed beside them!

Then - just as you are about to give them the KISS of LIFE they take in a Big One and settle down again.

Is it any wonder I can't sleep?

Brings to mind the song: "Every breath you take - every move you make"...etc.

But I can sit downstairs wiith a cup of hot milk listening to them all snoring away in harmony and think to myself..."They are all home safe...at peace....sleeping like babies...All's well in my world"

A Picture Paints a Thousand Memories

Welcome to a corner of my home.
 

A simple photograph...of an old sewing machine tucked away in a corner of my cottage beside the fire...Not so.

For it tells a many stories and triggers many fond memories...

*The sewing machine itself...was rescued from a skip/dumpster in Portmarnock, Dublin by a friend of mine. He saw it and thought of me. It came with original instruction book and box of accessories, the original packing slip from the factory, and even the original tube of oil. Some old lady had treasured it for years and it ended up in a skip. But then along came Cecil. Thank you Cecil.

 

*The table it stands on is an old, ornate Singer sewing machine stand...It was found by me in the derelict barn on the land that came with the cottage. Much rusted - but to me it was treasure and I sanded it, painted it black and gold and Paul and I added a top, recycled from a spare fence post. We had much fun putting this together , making something out of nothing and Paul taught me how to use a chopsaw and that was a lovely day. I love this table. Thanks Paul

 

*The hugging frog statue to the right of pic are labeled Pam & Paul. A charity shop find and they called to me ....so home they came and got Tippexed and labeled. I can really relate to how these two hug each other. I wonder why? (Paul on right and Pam on left) Thank you Vincent de Paul Shop

*Extreme right can be seen the pump and pipes for  the central heating coming from the stove, all of them installed by my plumber son, Jamie - my baby. I think he hated every minute he spent working here as it is so quiet and rural and everything a young man, used to the mayhem and bright lights of Dublin, does not need or want (Live long enough son, and you will appreciate it) Thank you Jamie.

 

* The book on the table top is an original copy of "Green Rushes"  by Maurice Walsh, the book the film The Quiet Man is based on. My cottage is named White O'Morn after the cottage in the film "The Quiet Man" and I have copied and recreated the cottage in the film as far as is practicable. It is my favourite film...thank you John Huston.

*The coaster. It is hard to read in the picture but it says " A friend is someone who knows all about you - but likes you anyway" It was a gift from a German friend we met in Canada in  2000. I treasure it for its sentiment and for the friend who gave it to us. Thanks  Klaus.

 

* The lamp. A carboot find and I love it even though only one of the lights  ever worked. The lamp base is a lillypad design and the frog was not originally part of  it but is one of the MANY my sis, Angie has given to my husband Paul, who is a fairy and frog fan-at-ic. For the plague of frogs- Thanks Angie.

So - not just a simple picture at all. But full of memories but whenI look at them, at any of the components, they can trigger a particular memory or emotion.

My cottage is full of these vignettes and as my gaze falls upon them ... settling for a few seconds on them, resting on each like a touchstone, I count my blessings and acknowledge them and think...... "Oh, so-and -so gave me that" or "I remember finding that little treasure" or "That reminds me of..."

One of my many mottos is "Delight in the little things"

 And I do.

 

 

What a Difference two Decades Make!

 

It is my firm belief that we do not look our best in our youth...well not our teenage youth anyway.

Our "hayday" youth which happens in ou r thirties is our best era. I can prove this with just a few well chosen photos from the past....

Here we have an example of "Cool Irish Band Circa 70's

 

 McNasty they were called, (bell bottoms made everyone look like their knees were tied together)

Now ....do you recognise anyone? Yes, one of Loose Change was also in McNasty. But that's not who you will recognise -but...another member of Loose Change is well known to you.

Yes! That handsome devil on the left is my husband Paul. It was taken at the wedding of  band member on the right, Wes Singleton. In the middle is the third band member, Gary Dixon, but more of him in a minute.

Now, I'd best poke fun at myself ('cos if you are going  to dish it out you've got to be able to take it too!)

Below a pic of ME taken in 1975. It was taken in Rue de Boucher, Brussels and yes that is Paul with me. We were buskers in those days. (actually, technically I was not a busker..all I did was smoke and count the money)

 

Look at those narrow hips! I wonder where they went? And is that a cigarette?!!!! yes, I used to smoke in those days. Paul had an afro hairstyle in the seventies. He used to grow hair in the seventies.

 Ahh, where did it all go? Time? hair? bad habits? narrow hips? All gone now ...(except for the narrow hips - I still have those...I DO - it's just that they are buried deep inside my new hips)

And below with Mal Langsdon from England. (He is the  photographer who compiled the facebook vid featuring us and some other rockers.)

They are playing in the restaurant, Au Tire Bouchon, Brussels, where Paul worked as a dishwasher. Mal was a photographer for UPI at the time. We met him on our first night in Brussels in Au Tire Bouchon (the Corkscrew)  and he gave us his apartment keys as he was going away for a month on assingnemt to Seveso where there had been a disaster. Can you believe it?

His friend and neighbour, Ruth Gruber, a journalist with UPI,  said

"Mal, don't do it - don't give your home to two strangers for a month - you don't know them!"

But Mal did, and we did not wreck his home (but I have to confess, I did eat all your Bovril...yeah, that was me, mea culpa - I owe you a jar of Bovril)

Ruth, was our/Mal's  next door neighbour and kept a beady eye on us but we soon became close friends with her and her cat, Star.  (she got to know us and caved in and realised we were good people)

We are all still in touch on Facebook after all these years...Hi, Mal- Hi Ruth!

Ruth wrote a piece about us as buskers for an American newspaper, I will find it and post here. I still have it. (Busker = street musician or troubadour!)
 

 

Oh, how I loved my hippie cheesecloth maxi dress and Paul is wearing a Guinness t-shirt. This was taken outside a restaurant in the Rue de Boucher, Brussels where Paul played for money. (Gawd, I look like a bulldog chewing a wasp!)

Vintage Motherlode! ...from Postman Pat.

 

My postman loves me. Yes, he does.

I shop on Ebay and so.... he is assured a secure job until his retiermient :-)

(Recession me arse!  Stick with me - all will be well)

I love my postman too. He brings me goodies on a regular basis. It feels like he is bringing me pressies and I am gushingly grateful to him every time. We have a great relationship ...me and my postman (he brings bills too but they are for Paul).

He only ever sees me in my pj's with bad bed head hair...you know the style? (Yeah, the one that looks like a gorilla broke into your bedroom at night and swung you around in circles for a while. That one. Interesting to say the least.)

But my postman? Does he care? Not a bit. He loves me. I love him. Simple.

Postman Pat.

 Yup, his name is Pat. (But sure this is Ireland and most men are called Pat or a variation of same)

I'm a woman and I'm nearly called Pat meself...if it wasn't for the M at the end of Pa...I'd be Pat wouldn't I?.

 Even some Americans of my aquaintence (you know who you are!) are named Pat, Patrick, Padraig Padhraic, Phairic or Paddy. Great ol' name. Gotta love it.

Anyway, I digress. Postman Pat brought me a treasure trove of vintage sewing notions this morning...all contained in a fab vintage tin from the 40's.

MOTHERLODE!

I bought a vintage tin on Ebay 'cos I am in my vintage tin phase.

 

Gorgeous tin. Sweetpeas flowers raised on lid and the word "Workbasket" engraved on it. Lovely.

I love it and I have not even opened it yet.

No one bid against me and so...£6 on Ebay? Good value? YES, Love it already!

 I knew it contained some sewing notions but I had fallen for the tin and the notions were to be  a bonus.

Rusted clasp...very hard to open....

 

I love rust I must say. Wouldn't you love to be the one to prise open this rusty clasp to reveal what lies behind?

BONUS! Yeah. yup, yes, it was burstin' with treasure from 1930/40's - gillions of them.

 

 

This tin was a toffee tin by Blue Bird Toffee and it has a lovely graphic of a little boy inside the lid. Some lady kept all her sewing notions in this for decades. It contained EVERYTHING  one could want.

I just knit a cardi for myself and I need a hook and eye and I will be using one of Queen Mary's for it. (Well, if it is good enough for Queen Mary it is good enough or this lol' ol' rock chick!)

Do you need to repair your HOSE?  ....or need to make your mark with some 60 year old tailor's chalk? Here it is ...I got it.

What is this?

Well, it is a close up of a pin cushion. Hmmm. But some wonderful lady many years ago went to the trouble of handmaking this. Crosstitch? knitted? Woven/ tapestry?  I don't know. But I do know that it will be given a new lease of life by me - as I will stick it with my pins and USE it. She made it to be used and so it will be.  Neat, careful, perfect work for a simple pincushion. It has been in an attic for many decades and now it gets its time in the sun.

 

Love this piece of vintage sewing notions....

 

Above: When did you last darn your silk hosiery? Well, next time...if you need shade 30? ....I'm yer' man...erh...I mean woman.

KIMME!!  Stop, desist, don't do it anymore.... I have found the darning mushroom of my dreams - so you are off the hook (She was looking all over Germany for one of these for me)

Vintage darning mushroom. Mine ...all mine...and found in the magic box of goodies...here it is ... I will use this. I have just started to knit socks and having spent hours knitting these I don't intend to throw them out just because they have developed a little hole at heel.

 

So - what was the most amazing item in the box?

These were..... Old crochet hooks. So tiny  - they are for mending silk stockings. How tiny do they have to be? I have included a normal ballpoint pen to give you an idea of scale.

 

 

Here is a pic of a the tip of the ball point pen for comparrison...

 

In this day and age...would you have the patience to repair your hose with this tiny instrument?

Well I hope you enjoyed the tour of my new old tin. I had a miniature china cabinet and made a display of these items. Love it.

My First Socks!!! 1st Cardigan and 1st Buttons on Bow Brooch

Some time ago you will remember that Kimme of Irish Cottage Dreams challenged me to a sock knit off. I had not made them before but am so glad I tried as I am very happy with the result and even went on to make a pair for Paul...cosies for his tosies!

And here they are......(drum roll) Tadaaaaaaaa!

The inaugural SOCKS!

 

Don't believe me? They look too good? ...and you think I might have put up a pic from a pattern. No way! Oh ye of little faith. Here I am modelling mine.

 

I must get a pic of Paul modelling his too. Will add it later.

Many thanks to Ivy and Lace Cottage's Marilyn who gave me  great help when I got a bit lost on these. I was about to sign myself into a home for the bewildered.

Thanks also to Kimme too for the challenge as I would never have got around to it otherwise. Now you have to show me yours Kimme! 
 

Why stop at socks? I got very adventurous and had a go at a cardi for myself. It is made from Braemore 50% wool, very thick yarn and knitted up really quickly. I love it even though it is a bit too big for me...just means I have a licence to eat methinks! 

 

Then I had to make a wooly flower pin for it from my "One Hundred Flowers to Knit and Crochet" I love that book.  This is crocheted and is called Lazy Daisy (reminds me of a fried egg ) Very easy even for a rookie crocheter like me.

 

I am now working on a gorgeous scarf from a pattern from the  Berroco range of patterns (as was the cardi) - Nimbus the cardigan is called and Rose for the scarf. Mine is a lovely blue Tweed Aran yarn... Google Berroco Knitting Patterns to find them. They have a fabulous range of patterns and all divided into skill levels and many are free. Mine are both from the easy level.

 

This  is what I am aiming for...

 

Gorgeous? Yes,....yes, I am aiming to be as gorgeous as her!.....to have a scarf like that, hair like that, a figure like that.....Oh well, I'll settle for the scarf. Here is a close up of the detail.

 

So easy to make as it is just rib but you knit into the back of the knit stitch to give it the twisted look.

Not only knitting but I have also been inspired by Twiggy's recent gift - a  gorgeous felted/buttoned brooch/pin. Here it is.

So I put my own spin on her design and came up with what I like to call "Buttons on Bow Brooch"

It looks great on that white sweater above pinned at a jaunty angle along the side of the crew neck (no, not worn in the middle like a feckin' clown!) Thanks for the idea Twiggy! You can nick mine now!

Ahhhh, you spotted the Cath Kidston fabric behind the brooch right?

Last night I made the neatest knitting bag (I don't mean cool or nice) but NEAT as in tidy and well made...I am never satisfied with my sewing attempts  always finding I have made a silly little mistake - until now. I am getting better. The nearest to perfect as I have ever done.

It is a Christmas pressie for a knitting friend of mine.

KIMME! CLOSE YER' EYES AND DON'T OPEN THEM UNTIL CHRISTMAS!

Of course I had to show it here and now 'cos I can't hold me water!

 But don't worry as Kimme will still get a surprise when she looks inside........(I am keeping that secret)

I am also working on a gorgeous little project for Angie of the Old Schoolhouse. We are sisters as you know and this year all us sisters are doing the sister bag pressie. That is lots of little presents of goodies that we know will go down a treat and so much fun opening all of them. Sure it's just like Christmas...Oh yeah, it will be Christmas!

Back to the NEAT knitting bag. I put in a long pocket for spare needles outside and a smaller pocket inside for knitting notions.

 

I decided to add my own shop label "Such Pretty Old Things" to decorate the pretty old blue ribbon at top of pocket as seen in this pic.

Do you see the lovely blue ribbon trim? Well, it is 50 to 60 years old. It came all packed up in its original pack with old label and I agonisied as to whether I should use it or not. 

 In the end I decided that Kimme is worth it! ...so I took a photo of it as I opened it. I'm so glad I did use it. There was exactly the right amount in the right shade. Here it is just after I opened it up.  "Pikaby Knitters Ribbon" I kept the pretty labels of course. I often have that dilema with vintage sewing notions because it seems a shame to use them but seems a shame not to too!

 

What else now...oh yes, I have been on Ebay, doing my bit to end the recession by shopping for Ireland.

I bought these lovely darning mushrooms from Oxfam on Ebay. I was surprised to find that Oxfam sell on Ebay.  So not only did I do my bit for the economy but I surported one of my favourite charities too!  They turned out to be much bigger than I had thought (who has time to read the whole description? Just spend, spend, spend)

I will keep and use the smaller one but I just have to paint the bigger one red with white spots for the cottage window to go with all of Paul's fairies and frogs that live there!
